My Blog
Discover the freedom, healing, and peace that come from full surrender to God. Learn how prayer journaling can help you take this life-changing step.
Have you ever prayed, "God, I give you my whole heart," but in the back of your mind, you’re holding onto a few secret rooms? Maybe it’s the room of an old hurt you’re not ready to forgive. Or the room of a specific worry you can’t stop trying to control. You’ve given Him most of the house, but there are still a few locked doors.
Many of us live this way. We love God, we trust Him with our salvation, but we struggle to trust Him with everything. We fear that if we hand over the keys to our entire heart, He might ask for something we’re not ready to give. Or worse, He might expose the mess we’ve tried so hard to hide.
But what if the greatest freedom, healing, and joy you’ve ever known is waiting on the other side of that final surrender? Giving God your whole heart isn’t about losing control; it’s about gaining a peace that surpasses all understanding.
The Fear Behind the Locked Doors
Let’s be honest, surrendering completely is scary. We hold back pieces of our hearts for many reasons.
We might fear:
- Losing control: If we give God our finances or our future, what will happen?
- Facing our pain: If we unlock the room of past trauma, will the pain be too much to bear?
- Being changed: If we give Him our habits or relationships, will He ask us to let them go?
These fears are real, and they keep us stuck. We end up in a spiritual tug-of-war, pulling against the very One who wants to set us free. We live with a low-grade anxiety, a constant tension, because we are trying to manage parts of our lives that were never meant to be in our control.
The Bible tells us that "perfect love drives out fear" (1 John 4:18). When we truly begin to understand God’s perfect, unconditional love for us, the fear of surrender starts to fade. We realise He isn’t trying to take from us; He is trying to give to us.
The Beautiful Exchange
When you finally decide to hand God the keys to every single room in your heart, a beautiful exchange takes place. It's not a loss, but a glorious trade.
You trade your anxiety for His peace.
When you stop trying to figure everything out on your own and trust His plan, a deep sense of peace settles over your soul. Philippians 4:7 promises a "peace of God, which transcends all understanding," that will guard our hearts and minds. This isn’t the absence of problems, but the presence of God in the middle of them.
You trade your brokenness for His healing.
We all have broken pieces. Instead of trying to hide them or fix them ourselves, full surrender allows the Great Physician to do His work. He can take the shattered parts of your story and create something beautiful. As Ezekiel 36:26 says, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."
You trade your weakness for His strength.
When we are trying to do life on our own, it’s exhausting. When you surrender, you stop relying on your own limited strength and start tapping into His limitless power. Suddenly, you find you can handle situations you once thought were impossible, because it is no longer you, but Christ in you.
You trade your confusion for His purpose.
Living with a divided heart often feels confusing and aimless. But when your heart is fully His, your purpose becomes clear. Your life is no longer about your own ambitions but about His glorious plan. Every day takes on new meaning because you are living for an audience of One.
How Prayer Journaling Becomes Your Key to Surrender
This all sounds wonderful, but how do you actually do it? How do you move from wanting to surrender to actually surrendering?
For many of us, the process can feel abstract. This is where prayer journaling becomes an incredibly practical and powerful tool. It’s not just about writing down your thoughts; it’s about creating a dedicated space to do business with God.
Intentional prayer journaling helps you:
Identify the Locked Rooms: As you write, the Holy Spirit will gently reveal the areas you’re holding back. You might start writing about your day and suddenly realize you have a deep-seated fear about your children’s future or a lingering bitterness towards a friend. Putting it on paper makes it real and gives you something tangible to hand over to God.
Be Painfully Honest: Your journal is a safe space to be completely honest with God. You can write, "God, I’m scared to trust You with my finances," or "I don’t know how to forgive this person." This raw honesty is the starting point for true surrender. You can't give Him what you won't admit you're holding onto.
Declare Your Surrender: After you’ve poured out your heart, you can take a powerful step of faith by writing a prayer of surrender. A simple sentence like, "God, I give you this fear. I release my grip and trust You completely," can be a turning point. It's an act of your will, memorialized on the page.
Are You Ready for the Exchange?
Giving God your whole heart is the most rewarding decision you will ever make. It is the path to the abundant life Jesus promised—a life of peace, purpose, and intimate connection with your Creator. The fear of letting go is nothing compared to the joy of being held by Him.
If you are tired of the tug-of-war and ready to experience the freedom of full surrender, you don't have to start this journey alone. Our prayer journals are designed to walk with you through this very process. Each 30-day journal provides prompts and scriptures to help you identify those locked rooms and bravely hand the keys over to God.
Let today be the day you stop living with a divided heart.
