My Blog
Inviting God into your journaling practice is an act of courage. It is creating a sacred space where you can be completely honest with yourself and with Him.
Have you ever felt like you were carrying a weight you couldn't set down? A hurt, a worry, or a question that circles in your mind with no place to go?
Many of us walk through life with our deepest feelings tucked away, believing we must carry them in silence. We might even pray, but the words feel stuck, unable to capture the true depth of our hearts.
If that sounds familiar, I want to share a simple, powerful practice that changed my relationship with God and brought healing to the most wounded parts of my story: prayer journaling.
For a long time, my journals were just records of events. I wrote about what happened, but I shied away from how I truly felt. I was afraid to be messy, to admit my anger, or to voice my deepest fears on paper. It felt safer to pretend everything was fine. But pretending doesn't bring peace; it only adds to the burden.
Inviting God into your journaling practice is an act of courage. It is creating a sacred space where you can be completely honest with yourself and with Him. It is where your words become a bridge to His healing grace. This practice is not about perfect prose; it is about pure presence. It is your heart on a page, offered to the One who can make it whole.
If you are ready to turn your journal into a place of encounter, here are three simple ways to start inviting God into your journaling practice.
1. Write with Raw Honesty
The first step to healing is honesty. God is not afraid of your anger, your doubts, or your tears. He already knows what is in your heart, and He longs for you to share it with Him. Your journal is a safe place to let go of the pressure to be perfect. You can pour out your heart without fear of judgment.
Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Think of your journal as the place where you "present your requests." Write down what is making you anxious. Name the frustrations and disappointments. Be specific. Giving words to your feelings strips them of their power over you. It is a profound act of trust to lay your unfiltered thoughts before God, believing He is big enough to handle them and compassionate enough to meet you there.
How to start:
Find a quiet moment. Open your journal and begin with a simple, honest prayer: “Lord, I am here. This is what is truly on my heart today…” Then, just write. Do not edit or censor yourself. Let the words flow, messy as they may be.
2. Turn Your Worries into Written Prayers
Anxiety often feels like a storm inside our minds. Prayer journaling is like building an ark. It is a way to take your worries one by one and hand them over to God. This practice transforms journaling from a monologue of your fears into a dialogue with your Saviour.
1 Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
Writing down your anxieties is a tangible way of casting them. Each word you write is an act of release. You are physically moving the burden from your heart and mind onto the page, leaving it in God’s loving hands.
This practice changes your focus. Instead of dwelling on the problem, you are turning your attention to the Problem-Solver. It is a powerful way to shift your perspective from fear to faith, even when your circumstances have not yet changed.
How to start:
When you feel overwhelmed by a worry, open your journal and write a letter to God. Start with "Dear Father..." and pour out everything that is troubling you. Hold nothing back. When you are finished, close the entry with a prayer of surrender, such as, "God, I leave this with you. I trust you."
3. Listen for His Voice on the Page
Journaling is not just about speaking; it is also about listening. After you have poured out your heart, it is important to create space to hear from God. His voice often comes as a quiet whisper, a gentle nudge, or a scripture that comes to mind. Your journal can become the place where you capture these moments of divine connection.
John 10:27 reminds us, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."
God is always speaking. The challenge is to quiet our own noise long enough to hear Him. After you have written out your thoughts and prayers, take a moment to be still.
Ask God questions like:
"God, what do you want me to know about this situation?"
"What is the truth you want me to hold onto right now?"
"How do you see me in this moment?"
Write down any thoughts, scriptures, or feelings of peace that come to you. This is how your journal becomes a record of God’s faithfulness. Over time, you will be able to look back and see how He has guided, comforted, and spoken to you through the pages.
How to start:
After you have finished writing out your heart, leave some blank space on the page. Write "God's truth:" at the top. Sit in silence for a few minutes and listen. Write down whatever comes to mind, trusting that the Holy Spirit is guiding you.
Friend, your story matters to God—every part of it. Your pain is not a barrier to Him; it is an invitation for Him to draw near. When words heal, it is because they are offered in the presence of the Healer. Prayer journaling is a simple yet profound way to begin that journey.
I pray you find the courage to open your journal today and invite Him in. He is waiting to meet you there, pen in hand, ready to rewrite your story with His unending grace.
