Discovering and living in your God-given identity is a journey of unlearning the world’s lies and embracing God’s truth. It’s a process of letting His voice be the loudest one you hear.
Who are you?
It’s one of the deepest questions we can ask, and we spend much of our lives trying to answer it. We look for clues in our relationships, our careers, our successes, and our failures.
The world is quick to offer us labels based on what we do or what has been done to us. We might be called a mother, a wife, an employee, a survivor, or a friend.
And while these roles are part of our story, they are not the core of our identity.
I’ve walked through seasons where my identity felt completely tangled up in my past, my mistakes, and the opinions of others. I looked in the mirror and saw someone who was falling short, someone defined by her weaknesses rather than her worth.
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’re wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, shame, or confusion, wondering who you really are beneath all the layers of expectation and experience.
If that’s you, I want to gently remind you of a life-changing reality: your true identity is not up for grabs. And it isn't determined by your circumstances or your feelings.
Your identity has been firmly and forever established by the God who created you, loves you, and redeemed you.
The problem is, we often forget to live like it. We listen to the wrong voices.
Discovering and living in your God-given identity is a journey of unlearning the world’s lies and embracing God’s truth. It’s a process of letting His voice be the loudest one you hear.
Journaling is a beautiful and powerful way to walk this path. It provides a quiet space to wrestle with these truths, to invite the Holy Spirit to speak, and to anchor your heart in what is real and eternal.
Let’s explore three foundational truths about your identity in Christ that have the power to change everything.
1. You Are Chosen and Deeply Loved
In a world that often makes us feel overlooked or conditional, the idea that we are chosen can be hard to grasp. We’re used to having to perform, to earn our place, to prove our value. But God’s love doesn’t work that way. Before you ever did anything to deserve it, He chose you.
Ephesians 1:4 tells us, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
Take a moment and let that sink in. Before the mountains were formed or the stars were placed in the sky, God had you on His mind. He knew you, He loved you, and He chose you to be His own.
This isn’t a generic, one-size-fits-all kind of love.
It’s a personal, specific, and intentional love. You are not an afterthought. You are not just one in a crowd to Him. He sees you, He knows your name, and He delights in you.
Zephaniah 3:17 paints a stunning picture of this love: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Can you imagine the Creator of the universe rejoicing over you with singing? That is how He feels about you.
When you start to believe that you are truly chosen and deeply loved, it changes how you see yourself. You no longer have to strive for acceptance or hustle for your worth. You can rest in the security of knowing you are already fully known and fully loved.
Journaling into the Truth:
Open your journal and write down the lie you’ve believed about your worth. Is it "I am not important" or "I have to earn love"? Then, write out Ephesians 1:4 and Zephaniah 3:17. Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you—as His chosen and beloved child.
2. You Are Forgiven and Made New
Many of us are haunted by the ghosts of our past. We carry the weight of our mistakes, replaying our failures and allowing shame to dictate our present.
The enemy loves to remind us of our sin, using it as a weapon to keep us small, quiet, and defeated. He wants us to believe that our past disqualifies us from God’s love and purpose.
But the Gospel declares a different reality. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, your identity is no longer tied to your sin. You are forgiven. You are clean. You are new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 is a cornerstone of our faith: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
This isn’t just a slight improvement or a turning over of a new leaf. This is a radical transformation. The old you—the one defined by sin and shame—is gone. In its place is a new creation, washed clean by the blood of Jesus.
Colossians 2:13-14 says He has “forgiven us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
Every sin, every mistake, every single thing that made you feel worthless was nailed to the cross with Jesus. It has been cancelled. You are no longer indebted to your past.
Walking in this truth means you can let go of the shame. You can stop punishing yourself for things God has already forgiven. When the accuser reminds you of your past, you can confidently remind him of your Saviour.
Journaling into the Truth:
In your journal, write about a mistake or a past sin that you’ve had trouble letting go of. Be honest about the shame you feel. Then, write out 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Colossians 2:13-14. Write a prayer of thanksgiving to God, thanking Him for forgiving and cleansing you. Symbolically release that burden to Him on the page.
3. You Are a Masterpiece with a Purpose
In moments of doubt, it’s easy to feel insignificant, as if our lives don’t really matter. We compare ourselves to others and feel we have nothing unique to offer. We see our flaws, our weaknesses, and our imperfections, and we conclude that we are broken goods.
But God sees something entirely different. He sees a masterpiece.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
The Greek word for “handiwork” is poiema, from which we get our word “poem.” You are God’s poem, His work of art. He crafted you with intention, skill, and love. Your unique personality, your gifts, your quirks—none of them are mistakes. They are all part of the beautiful masterpiece He is creating.
And this masterpiece was created with a purpose. God has prepared good works specifically for you to do. Your life has profound meaning. You are not here by accident. You have a unique role to play in His kingdom, a role that no one else can fill. Your story, your experiences, and even your struggles are being woven together to equip you for that purpose.
When you begin to see yourself as God’s masterpiece, you stop striving to be like someone else. You can embrace who you are, confident that God has a plan for your life. You can step out in faith, knowing that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6).
Journaling into the Truth:
Make a list in your journal of the things you like about yourself—your talents, your passions, your character traits. Then, write out Ephesians 2:10. Ask God to show you how He wants to use your unique design for His glory. Pray for the courage to step into the good works He has prepared for you.
My dear friend, your identity is the most important thing about you. It is the foundation upon which you build your life. Letting go of the world’s lies and embracing who God says you are is a process, but it is a journey worth taking. It leads to confidence, healing, and a life of purpose.
