10 Prayer Journaling Prompts to Beat Fear and Uncertainty

Should I go this way? Can I go that way? How much longer do I stay here before I can get there?

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” –Jeremiah 29:11

I've been experiencing a heaviness in my chest brought on by anxious thoughts. There is change coming, but I'm not sure what it will be. Should I go this way? Can I go that way? How much longer do I stay here before I can get there?

My husband (Brian) and I have been stuck in one spot for a very long time, yearning to start moving forward again. And now it looks like it’s time to get going; the season of waiting is finally over. It is both exciting and terrifying at the same time: exciting because we trust that it’ll be good, terrifying because we don’t know the exact details yet.

It reminds me of when our kids were learning to ride a bike. Their training wheels would centre the bike's tires and keep them from going anywhere. They would push and push on the pedals, but nothing would happen—until one of us came and gave them a gentle push. Then the back tire would meet the road, and away they'd go!

It feels like Brian and I have been peddling and peddling, and now God has come to give us a little push. But instead of taking off, we're trying to keep the bike upright because we're not sure which direction we're supposed to steer.

The Art of Living in Transition

Periods of transition often feel like being on a hamster wheel. You keep making small changes, trying new things, hoping that something will shift just enough to get you on a path forward. But with every corner you round comes the realization that you’ve been there before.

The same day after day routine gets repeated for weeks, months, and even years.

Yet, it’s in these seasons of stagnation that God often does His greatest work. While we may feel stuck, God uses these moments to shape us, to draw us closer to Him, and to prepare us for what’s ahead.

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of this profound truth. These words assure us that even in times of uncertainty, we are being held in the hands of a God who sees the full picture and is leading us toward His good purpose.

If you are in a season of waiting, ask yourself this:

  1. How has God been changing your heart and perspective in this season?
  2. What has God been teaching you in this season?
  3. Who has God put in your path that you may not have noticed if you were elsewhere?
  4. What have you learned about God while you were waiting?
  5. Was there a character trait of yours that God has been working on?
  6. Is there a character trait of God's that you have learned more about?
  7. Was there something in your life that God removed in this season because it wasn't what was best for you?
  8. Has God shown you a new purpose or direction for your life during this time?
  9. Have you discovered new gifts and talents that God has given you in this season?
  10. How have you seen God's faithfulness and provision even in the midst of difficult circumstances?

Trusting God Has a Good Plan Even When the Path Seems Unclear

The last time we were in a season like this, mBriua said it was like walking through fog—you can see the path a few feet in front of you, but you can't make out what is beyond that.

Every direction seems both promising and overwhelming at the same time. All you can do is put one foot in front of the other and trust that someday the fog will lift and everything will become clear.

That said, it’s natural to feel that mix of eagerness and fear, even as we trust God for the outcome. You’re ready to move forward, but either nothing is coming together for you to do so, or the timing feels off.

This is where leaning into trust becomes essential—not in your ability to map every step, but trust in the One who already knows where the trail leads.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

These words are a gift. They don’t promise that the road will be devoid of obstacles, but they do assure us that God’s vision for our lives is ultimately good. When viewed through this lens, the unknown becomes an invitation to lean deeper into faith rather than a reason to pull back in fear.

But how do we trust practically, especially when everything in us wants to wrestle for control?

1. Start with honest prayer.

Share your struggles, your fears, and even your resistance to letting go with God. Trust isn’t about having perfect faith; it’s about showing up honestly and inviting Him into the mess of your emotions.

2. Focus on the present step, not the whole staircase.

God often gives guidance one step at a time. Instead of fixating on the entire picture, ask, “What’s the faithful thing I can do today?” Small acts of obedience build the bigger story.

3. Remember how He’s shown up before.

Transitions may feel unfamiliar, but God’s faithfulness isn’t. Reflect on moments when He guided you in the past. Write them down and revisit them when doubt creeps in.

4. Surround yourself with wise counsel.

God speaks through people, too. Reach out to friends, mentors, or faith communities who can remind you of His promises and help you stay grounded.

5. Release what isn’t meant to come along.

One of the hardest parts of a transition is letting go of what no longer serves you. But pruning is necessary for growth. Trust that letting go creates space for something better.

Transition is a chance to grow—not just in skill or opportunity but also in faith in a Father who knows you and loves you deeply.

You’re not walking this unknown trail alone. There’s a Planner who’s gone ahead of you, clearing the way for a future filled with hope and purpose.

Keep stepping forward, even if the trail is foggy. You’ll find that the mist lifts as you move, and the path will become clearer with every faithful step.

Love always,

Crystal
